English

In modern dramaturgy, place can play an active role, create tension, change the course of the narrative, and even become the main center of crisis. This importance highlights the necessity of analyzing the position of place in Iranian dramatic works, including the plays of Akbar Radi. In the works of this playwright, place plays a guiding and/or limiting role. In particular, the house in Radi's works becomes the main center of family, social class, and ideological conflict and plays an important role in the formation of tensions. To analyze the role of place, in this research, the plays Melody of the Rainy City and Mr. Gill's Magnificent Smile have been selected as case studies because these plays are among Radi's works in which place appears as a tension-generating factor in the narrative from the very beginning and as the story progresses, under the influence of the characters' actions and dialogue, it acquires new meanings and becomes a multilayered and determining element. The theoretical framework of this study is the semiotic-semantic approach. The semiotic-semantic approach does not consider meaning to be fixed and predetermined, but rather the result of the interaction of various signs in the text, discourse, and socio-cultural contexts. In this framework, place, as one of the important signs in connection with language, the actions of characters, and power relations, is constantly redefined and takes on new meaning. The chosen framework allows place to be analyzed alongside other elements such as objects, relationships, and dialogue between characters as an influential, dynamic, and multilayered element in a semiotic system. The main question of this research is how place in Akbar Radi's plays is transformed from a purely physical concept to an active element? The results of this research show that in these case studies, each character constructs a different meaning of place based on his social position, goals, and perspective. This makes place the main center of confrontation between perspectives and social powers, and plays an active and decisive role in advancing the narrative. In Akbar Radi's works, place gradually becomes a dramatic and meaning-creating force that plays an important role in representing the crisis of identity, the collapse of old value systems, the tensions of social classes, and the shifting of power. Place not only guides or limits the behavior and decision-making of characters, but also takes on a new meaning under the influence of their lived experience.
