The works of female playwrights have long served as a mirror to the complexities and challenges faced by women, reflecting the often-overlooked social issues and psychological nuances that shape their lives. Through their writings, these playwrights have provided a platform for the voices and experiences of women to be heard, shedding light on the dimensions of female personality and existence that have been neglected or marginalized by male-dominated literary traditions. The study and analysis of these works offer a unique window into the inner lives and struggles of women, revealing the intricate web of social, cultural, and psychological factors that influence their experiences and shape their identities. This article delves into the seminal work of Elizabeth Carey, a pioneering female playwright of the Renaissance period, and her play The Tragedy of Mariam. Through a critical examination of this play, the researchers uncover the complex and often contradictory portrayals of female characters, highlighting the tensions and conflicts that arise from the societal expectations and restrictions placed upon them. Utilizing Leslie Ferris' framework of female archetypes, the study categorizes and analyzes the female conflicts and characterizations present in the play, revealing the ways in which Carey's work reflects and challenges the dominant patriarchal norms of her time. The researchers argue that the feminine contradictions and conflicts that arise in Carey's play are rooted in the social structures and power dynamics that have shaped women's lives throughout history. This study demonstrates the significance of Elizabeth Carey's work as a pioneering example of feminist literature, and underscores the importance of continued scholarship and research into the works of female playwrights and the experiences of women.
