Incorporating animation elements into live-action cinema is increasingly prevalent, to the extent that some argue that the survival of live-action filmmaking may become impossible without blending with the world of animation. Numerous renowned filmmakers have simultaneously worked in both domains, and their numbers continue to grow. When elements of animation and live-action films are combined, how should these two categories be defined and distinguished? Can we differentiate between these two artistic forms? Given the evolving landscape of filmmaking—including its objectives, approaches, and audience engagement—there may be a need for a new definition. This study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach to examine the ongoing transformations within these two cinematic media while offering insights into the potential future of cinema as an art form. The findings indicate that although differences between live-action and animation persist in both production processes and audience perception, films no longer need to be confined to a single category. Instead, filmmakers can leverage the most effective medium to enhance storytelling and artistic expression.
